The Origin of Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is a holiday celebrated by people all over the world and it’s a romantic and beautiful day. In Valentine’s Day, which day is popular all over the world, lovers express their love by giving chocolates, cards, flowers and so on to their beloved. There’s variety of stories about Valentine’s Day, but the most popular one is about the story in roman period.

It’s said in roman period, there’s a tyrant who wanted to invade other countries and expand his territory, so he issued an order that all young people must join the army and contribute their life to the country and this brought millions of young men in grief because they had to leave their wives and engaged in war that they disliked. But there’s no choice for them but join the army with low-spirit. Although all young men fought the war for Claudius, the tyrant of roman, but due to the low-spirit, lots of young men died and wounded. The wounded young men got treated by Saint Valentine, the priest in roman period, who felt sorry for the young men and decided to do something in their behalf, so he held wedding ceremonies for young couples in secret and made love couples husbands and wives.

The news about the wedding ceremony spread through the whole country that brought more and more young lovers who wanted to marry with their beloveds to the little church to get married. It became more and more popular at that time that almost every single man went to Saint Valentine’ to have their wish came true. However, paper can’t hide the fire, the Claudius finally knew the thing and he was totally furious with Saint Valentine, for he had to prevent his soldiers from mind wandering, but what Saint Valentine was doing exactly attracted soldiers’ minds that made soldiers unwilling to fight the war anymore, so the tyrant put him as well as a couple of young man and woman into jail.

Valentine suffered from badly treatments during his life in jail, and at last died in the jail in 24th February. In order to remember what great things Saint Valentine had done for all young people, people named the day of 24th February as Valentine’s Day – the day for couples. Then Valentine’s Day was passed down by generations from place to place and became popular to all over the world now.

Couples should know that in ancient times it’s not easy for lovers to get married, so people should regard their beloved as treasure.
